It's a Cardi Cover-up

This was my absolute favorite look from the Milly Resort '08/Cabana '08-'09 show. The cardi covering up a sexy bikini. This combo is nerdy, yet preppy librarian meets sexy surfer with a rockin' bod.

Garage Sailors

Meet Maude and Aoiffe, my new best friends! These super fun girls live next to my sister in Short Hills and were are trusty sales girls at our annual designer yard sale. H, Daphne's Husband woke up that morning singing, "Wake-up Garage Salers!" As we were unpacking our goods an entire case of Sailor caps were unearthed. We went from a Salers to a Sailors in a snap! Everyone received a gift with purchase, not to mention a little song and dance from "Garage Sailor" the musical written, directed and coregraphed by Maude!

Aries K- A Nice Reliant Automobile

Don't you love the look on the the Aries K? It has to be the boxiest car ever made. Jenny Spitz, my friend had one so similar to this in high school and college and seeing this one on the streets of New York made me very nostalgic.

Sarah Shirley for Target TV

On June 2, 2008 Target hosted a viewing party of the CFDA awards at F.I.T. for all students of fashion schools including F.I.T., Parsons and Pratt. I hosted the red carpet where everyone was treated like a celeb as they turned it out for glossy picture they got to keep. After posing in their hot creations, many were self designed or self styled, they worked there way to me where I interviewed everyone on what they were wearing. I have to say I learned a thing or two!

Most worn label of the evening: Forever 21!

The event was sponsored by Target, however not many people rocked up in a look or a piece from the bullseye. Note to Target: PLEASE GET A STORE IN MANHATTAN!

The Mini on the MAXI

Here's my mini report on the Maxi craze of the season. Best Maxi ever is worn by the socialite, Ms. Polombo at the Milly resort Fashion show and rooftop cocktail event. She lights up the roofdeck with her Milly dress. But the way she throws on a blazer and effortlessly cinches it with a white belt is what gives her standout style. The slit also make this a winning look as it breaks up the silloute and shows off the hot open toe lace-up grey bootie.

From the Target/CFDA viewing party-This betty sported the cutest vintage maxi from Denmark or Sweeden. Opps, I forgot, need to write it down at the event.

Love this Maxi because it's strapless! This is a good look with the platform wooden wedges and the big, bold, bright colors!

Boy Book Ends

Today, I took a client of mine to purchase a tuxedo and a black dinner suit. We selected a very classic 1 button, notch lapel Tux from Zegna. It made me recall this pic taken at Kelly's (my Aussie bestie from when i attended school there at 16) wedding in Australia. These are two of her handsome brothers sporting a TUX. Liam, being the emcee of the evening made his look so dapper by adding a white scarf which looks so Cary Grant to me.

Yesterday, I did a fun phone interview with a fashion editor regarding posing tips for the Holiday party circuit. Funny jumping to December when it's not even July but magazines work so far in advance. We discussed some important tips for drinks/no drinks and how to not make your arms look fat in photos.

Here goes:
- Drinks are OK but hold them down and elegantly as they can be a great prop.
- As for arms, put your shoulders back and let your arms hang, this will give them a very cut appearance. See pic above for details!

Magnum Mustaches are Back

Had drinks and dinner at Jason's(We worked at Tommy Hilfiger together!) Casa de 6th Precinct and I could not help but notice he was channeling Magnum P.I. with his mustache! Dare I say this is a new facial hair trend!

Milk Crate Cafe

Any one want to join me here? This is such a great idea, I only wish I could have come up with it. Milk crates become chairs and cafe tables so effortlessly! Not sure of the name but there are many little out of the way places in small alley like streets like this in Melbourne, Australia. This cafe in particular is in Flinders Lane. Melbourne is renonwed for it's cafe culture and truly amazing coffee and much better and cooler than Starbucks, even though they have infiltrated Down Under.

This is such a cool way to create space as well. That's the allure of cafe's is their ability to spill out on the streets and create beautiful outdoor rooms. Aince I'm in the styling biz and work on sets I think I'd make my impromtu cafe seating out of apple boxes, a box we often use for models or subjects to sit on, build up a set or a person. Many times, on the morning shows I'm standing on one to make myself a similar height to the anchor that i am standing next to, especially if i'm behind a demo table!

Orange Crush

Here's my dream car, it's so nectar(sweet)! I snapped this in Costa Rica in a place called Esta Rios, but I'm not sure really what it is called. No doubt an amazing surf break. Had the best fish tacos there too!

Sunset Disco at the Dexter Lake Club

Happy Sunday, Hope you enjoyed your Saturday night and the summer Soltice. I did! I was lucky to be on the roof terrace with a few friends and then met some new friends.

Above, an image from my sister, Daphne's wedding on Keuka Lake, New York where I will be over the Fourth of July with my entire family and Kevin of course. This is the dance floor just at dusk and while we were eating because nobody is dancing. Then the Michael Jackson played and it was all over. For years, my cousin and I would always try to figure out what they were saying in the beginning of the song Shama Lama Ding Dong from Animal House. Only recently, it dawned on me that it's, "It's so good to be back here at the Dexter Lake Club!" not the Dest De Lay Club!

Pucci Prints Powder Room

Pool Posing

Since it's Saturday and I'd either love to be a.) at the pool or b.) surfing with Kevin but instead I'm home in front of the computer feeling guilty (wait i thought i stopped feeling guilty this year as part of my resolve!) because I had not posted any blogs in 4eva! I came across this out take of a photo shoot I did and thought wow, what if you really saw someone laying around the pool like this on your next trip to the Hamptons, The Shore be it Jersey or other or Miami? What would you think? I'd love to know.

Quick Style Tip- Blue Crush, the hot surfer girl movie brought it on but it's super hot to not match your bikini top to your bottom. These retro bottoms are actually my mothers from the 60's are there is no top! MOM.... what happened to your top????????????????The top is from Diane Von Furstenberg.

Love the combo? Try it out this summer! Send me your pics at contact@sarahshirley.com

Surf's Up

Surf is on my brain! This is my last weekend in the city and then I will be hitting the surf left and right breaking waves. I took this photo is 2005 the day after Louise, my sister and I ran the San Diego marathon. This is in Encinitas, just north of San Diego! Love the surfer's walking down the path to paddle out.

Plastics Pledge

Please take a look at this and consider before you buy the next case of bottled water. I recently stopped buying Fiji and Pelligrino, two things I absolutly adored because every week when emptyied my recycling bin i realized how much stuff i was throwing out. Also not to mention all the money, cash, time and energy it took to get the water here from Fiji and from Italy.

Dear Sarah,

Did you know that an estimated 100 million tons of plastic debris have accumulated in two areas of the Pacific Ocean that together are larger than the continental United States? (These areas are aptly called the Eastern and Western Garbage Patches.) There is so much plastic, that it outnumbers the zooplankton six to one.

Plastic, like diamonds, are forever.

It doesn't biodegrade and no naturally occurring organisms can break it down. Plastic photo-degrades, which means that sunlight breaks it down into smaller and smaller pieces. Those small pieces drift in the ocean and are mistaken for food by fish and birds.

Seabirds are often found dead with innards full of plastic. Sea turtles mistake plastic bags for food and are often found dead with their intestines clogged by plastic bags. Sadly, 1 million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals die each year due to ingestion of or entanglement in plastics.

The scope of the problem is astounding, but the Surfrider Foundation is working, through our Rise Above Plastics Campaign, to discourage the use of single-use plastics and encourage everyone to reduce, reuse and recycle.

On a more personal level, I have committed to using cloth shopping bags and reusable drink containers. I'm asking you to do the same and make a pledge to Rise Above Plastics. It's a simple pledge to:

Use reusable bottles for water and other drinks.
Use cloth bags for groceries and other purchases.
Recycle the plastic bags and bottles you already have.

I know that you, as a Surfrider Foundation member, are especially concerned about the effects of plastic on our oceans, waves and beaches. You and I both know that the best solution to the plastics problem is to reduce, reuse and recycle - a simple solution that is easy to commit to!

If you think that your pledge won't make much of a difference, think again. For each reusable bag you use, another 400 plastic bags will be kept from being used. Every reusable water bottle will keep another 167 plastic bottles from entering the environment.

Simply click here and pledge to Rise Above Plastics.

Thank you for making a difference for our world's oceans, waves and beaches.

Sincerely,
Jim Moriarty

Hairstory

Geometric hairstyles are back in a big way. Did you ever sport a razored look or an asymmetrical cut? Here is a new take on business on top, party in the back other wise know as "the mullet!" This is not the ugly redneck hair "don't" perse, but a chic way to do short on the sides, long in the back!

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle your old Manolo's

How's this for a green movement..My friend, Erin, (above on the left with the green dress and shoes) whom I've know since I was four, introduced me to clutch purses while in first grade is here sporting green patent leather Manolo Blahniks that I sent down her way. These Manolo's are more than green they are a limey-chartreuse hue to be exact and recycled and reused. Rosa, a friend and fellow shoe addict gave the shoes to me in the attempt that I could rock up in them to the latest event or party. Day after day I tried and they're just a smidgen too small and make my toes curl in pain. In my yearly attempt to shed all the things that are cluttering and tempting my life (if only i was 10 lbs thinner or only if these shoes were bigger) I sent a mailing to see who was in need of a pair of brand new Manolo's. Sure enough Erin was the perfect fit a true Cinderella story! Moral-if you can use it, loose it! Pass it on!

Beautiful Bread

If you can't have beautiful bread in life then what can you have? My cousin-bestie, Tine snapped this photo on her recent jaunt to the South of France. I love the idea of taking something so common like bread and making is GORGEOUS! Crafting bread into the shape of a lobster is so bloody brilliant and inspiring. Today, I'm making everything in my life beautiful from the white halter dress I am wearing to my model casting this afternoon to the gorgeous coffee I made this morning to the way I answer the phone!

The Last Thing I Bought

How is this for Recession Chic: Tangerine Canvas very sportif wedge espadrilles purchased at Strawberry for $30 dollars! It dawned on me a few days ago as I was answering a questionaire for People's Revolution, a prominent and edgy public relations firm in New York and LA that these shoes were in fact that last thing I purchased. Not the trench coat from Marcs on Chapel Street in Melbourne. I spotted these shoes in the window and had to go in for a closer look. After much searching in many boxes I found them and go a ton of other woman in the store excited about them too. When I actually wore them out on the street, woman were stopping me on my shoes. WOW, my $30 dollar pick me up. What a thrill.
