Manhattan's Largest Closet

Have you ever wondered where all the fabulous home furnishings and accessories come from that are found in every magazine editorial spread, catalogue, or photo-shoot? Well Tuesday afternoon, i found out. "The Prop Company" is an enormous, warehouse size space, located in Chelsea, that serves as a go-to location for stylists, visionaries and photographers alike. Basically, once a concept is created, and visual direction is decided upon as for how a shoot will look, accents and accessories are needed to enhance the story, and to capture the "essence" behind the theme. Oftentimes, the shoots embody outrageous, quirky, or "era-specific" concepts that utilize special pieces, such as a 1950's sofa, a Lucite armchair, an array of blue porcelain dishes, etc, to convey the theme to readers, things not readily available or accessible at a whim. Hence, where the prop-house comes in. Thousands upon thousands of items have been collected here, and exist for stylists to source their desired pieces, and either rent or purchase them, given their client and their budget. From furniture, to decorations, accessories, blankets, linens, dress forms, kitchen-ware, tabletop...even perfume bottles, all categories of home are covered, and allow stylists to explore their options, and select pieces exactly right to complete the look.
The space itself was incredibly inspiring to be inside, and almost looked like a vintage photo-shoot in itself. From antique to modern furniture, tabletop and accessories, everything was captured and on display in this mega sourcing-center. It was so amazing to see, and i can't wait to revisit the space when i have my own photo-shoot to source for.

Jail Break-Impromptu Photo Shoots

Here we are friends and family doing what we do best! No it's not fighting but staring in photo shoots! I've been doing this since I was about 12. Yelling to cousin Tine to be in my Ralph Lauren inspired shoot in the front yard with stacks of wood or in my mother's "good room" for a more haute couture shot. This is my sister Daph in Courreges and my cousin Jody and I at The Liberty Hotel in Boston doing our famous "Jail Break" shoot. My stripes say I am appropo for the local since this place used to be a jail.

Below, I've placed Alethia, my partner in fashion crimes and my mentee, Damaris in a taxi cab garage on the long way back from a fashion show on 28th street and 10th avenue. This is one location I have to shoot at!

Liefsdottir Fashion Show

Yesterday, Liefsdottir - the high-end line created by Anthropologie and sold at upscale department stores, showcased their Spring 2009 collection at their showroom. The brand, a Finnish idea, meaning "daughter of leaf," expanded upon an "under the sea" theme, and used a wonderfully whimsical color pallet of pastels and soft hues to enhance their collection. The showroom space itself was turned into a fairytale playground...covered in tulle-enhanced decorations, floral arrangements, and seashell trimmings. With ambiance lighting, and various dress-forms placed about, highlighting key pieces from the collection, the space truly embodied the spirit behind the line. The clothes themselves were incredible. Attention to detail was key, and each look was comprised of a beautifully made garment, an eye-catching accessory, and a well-incorporated shoe. From thick brocades, to iridescent silks and charmuses, the line was whimsical and princess-like in style in shape. Splashes of coral, lemon, teal, seashell, sky blue and creme dominated the collection, and helped convey the feeling of "underwater appeal." Make-up and hair were inspired by 1920's housewives, and consisted of over-rosey cheeks, dewy skin, fresh, bright eyes, and pinned curls; all soft and flowing, with hints of childhood play and youth. The models, eight in all, paraded around the showroom space for the two hour show, modeling sequentially each of the twelve looks, and debuting the spirit behind the line.
The show was absolutely amazing, and really spoke to the attendees. When entering the space, you really felt as if you understood the concept behind the clothes, and where the inspiration was derived. From the colors, to the space decorum, to the clothing and fabrics, and the music; all aspects of the presentation helped convey the spirit of the line, and the origin of the brand. Here are some pictures from the event.
The Liefsdottir line can currently be found at Anthropologie, Nordstrom and Bloomingdale stores. Here are the links so you can shop their current Fall 2008 collections, in stores now.

Elle a Chanel

I'm soo excited about this Coco Chanel movie!! It is going to be on the Lifetime network staring Shirley MacLaine as Coco Chanel. The movie tells Chanel's story from her humble beginnings to her iconic rise in fashion. For those who love the CHANEL brand, this movie is a great way to get to know the woman behind it all. She made her stamp in the fashion world many years ago and even after her death she continues to inspire. Don't miss this tantalizing biography of an icon.

Tune in on Sunday, September 13 at 8pm on Lifetime mylifetime.com

Drag Race

Don't you love drag queens! I do- here is Lady Bunny at the Pat Field show! She has the biggest hair EVER!

Destination Style

Last night, I witnessed the Patricia Fields, Destination Style show or rather spectacle at the Edison Ballroom in New York! There we so many fun touches like mannequins on the stage, plenty of drag queens, models coming out with racing flags and steering wheels. When each model was finished strutting her stuff on the cat walk she joined her fellow mannequins on the stage. The girl with the steering wheel sat in a car that was on stage so it all made sense! But making sense is not the point to Patricia, for her it's all about having fun. I got a chance to chat with her for a hot second and I said, " Thank you darlink, you are the only woman in the fashion industry with a sense of of humour!" She laughed, "You have too!"

Love the lashes!

Poppin' in Pink on the Court

I took this picture of Venus Williams at the US Open on Thursday night at the quarter finals where she played against her sister, Serena. I had the pleasure of attending as the guest of Citizen watch company in there fancy sponsor box and what a treat it was! Whoever said you couldn't look amazing while dominating at a professional sport was oh so wrong! V was rocking it on the court in her own design, Eleven, sold at Steve and Barry's nationwide. Everything from line is adorably fashion-forward, perfect for the trendy, up-beat and stylish fashionista and priced under $20 bucks! How can you beat that! I love her pink "spanky-pants" she used to add a splash of color to her more demure black color-scheme. What a way to kick up the heat Venus! Below, is the link for Steve and Barry's so you can check-out her entire line and others created especially for the store by celebs like SJP and Amanda Bynes.
